THE CASTLES IN THE REGION
Although castles proliferated during the Middle Ages, a castle not only served military functions, but also served as a residence for the nobles and the kings themselves. Although it could be located in the urban nuclei, the common thing was that it was located in strategic places, normally in high points.
The Terres de l'Ebre have fortifications, castles and towers that are an example of a time that includes the Muslim constructions that in many occasions happened to be occupied by the Templars. Different examples are found in Miravet, Tortosa, l'Ametlla de Mar, Horta de Sant Joan, Batea, Arnes or Corbera d'Ebre, which today still witness this geography of the Middle Ages.
