Like most of the defensive constructions located at the end of the Ebro valley, the Castle of Ascó was constructed during the Muslim domination and conquered by the Christians in the 12th century. Much of the fortress, declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya – the Catalonian Government - was destroyed during the war of the “Guerra dels Segadors” (Reapers´ War) in the mid-seventeenth century.
Today, a tower of Arab origin reconstructed during the Carlists´ war, and parts of a Gothic tower are preserved.
