MUSEUMS AND INTERPRETATION CENTERS

In its etymological origin, a museum was a temple of muses, a sacred place. And it is that the muses were the goddesses of memory. The purpose of the numerous museums and interpretation centers that can be visited in the four counties is to make the traditions, culture, architectural heritage, history of the Terres de l'Ebre known and also to interpret them in a contemporary way.

The Museo de las Terres de l'Ebre, located in Amposta, is the museum of reference as far as the permanent collections of archeology, history or natural surroundings of the whole territory. The Tortosa Museum, housed in what was once the modernist building of the local slaughterhouse, also preserves a permanent collection that traces the history of this city from prehistoric to contemporary times, highlighting the Roman and Muslim past.

In recent years, Amposta has been a focus of contemporary art, with the installation of the Centre d'Art Lo Pati, which includes some visual proposals from both local and international authors.

These lands also have spaces of exhibition and divulgation on the Els Ports mountains and the Ebro Delta, the prehistoric and Iberian heritage, religious art, the Spanish Civil War, or on illustrious characters linked to the territory, like the painter Pablo Picasso, who has a small dedicated interpretation center in Horta de Sant Joan.
