The “Assut dam” is located in one of the most spectacular and representative spots of the lower Ebro river course. Located at the height of Xerta and Tivenys, it seems that its construction goes back to the Islamic period. It was restored in the middle of the 12th century, but still, it was not finished until 1441. In the middle of the19th century it was prepared to drive the water from the canals of the Right and the Left of the Ebro river, which still today serve to irrigate the Delta and the interior orchards of the valley. In spite of these works, a sluice gate allows the passage of the boats sailing the Ebro river.
