The Canaletes river, as it passes through the Fontcalda Sanctuar, narrows forming a small canyon that offers a spectacular landscape. The waters, which make their way through immense stone walls, are forming huge ponds and natural pools that are a temptation for those who walk in the area when it is hot. The name of this place, “Fontcalda” (Hot Springs), is due to the thermal spring of hot water at the end of this area of gorges. From this spring comes the mineral-medicinal water at 25ºC - the waters contain chloride, calcium carbonate, magnesium sulfate and sodium chloride. Here was an old spa which was the place of pilgrimage for those who believed in the healing and therapeutic qualities of the waters, organizing pilgrimages that today are still celebrated on the first Sunday of May.
