Route 7. Sierra de Cardó - el Boix / Cabrafeixet

43519 El PerellóTarragona, Catalunya

Departure point: El Perelló

Duration: half day

Route by car: 11,7 km

Route on foot: 250 m

Circular: no

The town of El Perelló is famous for the production of excellent honey, among other things. This is the starting point of our route, with drastically changing landscape in contrast to the rice fields of the delta plain. Drive along the TV-3022 road towards Rasquera, crossing a mosaic of rocky areas with olive and almond groves, up to the crossroads where access to the Cabrafeixet cave paintings is indicated on the left. This area is particularly attractive for birds of prey in full migration, sharing airspace with the various species of eagles that inhabit these areas, such as the short-toed Eagle or the Bonelli's Eagle. Migrant soaring birds such as black kites, honey buzzards or white storks fly over the area, close to the coast and where it is easy for them to get thermal currents that save energy throughout their migratory journey. You can also see other Mediterranean species such as the bee-eater, red-legged partridge, mistle thrush or the European turtle dove. On the sides of the fields and tracks it is easy to see crested larks and woodlarks. A good number of warblers inhabit this area out of the winter season, such as the Dartford warbler, Orphean Warbler or subalpine warbler. Furthermore, it is a great place to see a number of orchids, after rainy spring months as well as a huge range of butterflies. Finally, you will arrive at the area where you can get closer on foot to the cave paintings, which are extremely interesting, and so combine a historical visit with the observation of emblematic rock birds such as the blue rock thrush or black wheatear.

Phenology:

The period between March and November is definitely the best time to visit this area. However, if what you want is to enjoy watching the migration of soaring birds then between August and mid-November is the time to come.  And if you want to focus on discovering a diverse range of nesting species in the area, come between April and June.
