It is surprising that there are beech forests in the Els Ports mountains since they are forests of colder latitudes and humid climates. For this reason they are at the limit of their geographical distribution and, therefore, they are of the most southern of Europe. For this reason the beech trees of Els Ports are very special and with very specific characteristics that differentiate them from the rest of European beeches. They are always facing north because it is the wettest slope, and search the bottom of the ravines. So the beech is surrounded by steep slopes, when the typical beech trees are accustomed to be on plain terrain.
