The total solar eclipse of 2026: a historic opportunity for the Terres de l’Ebre
On 12 August 2026, the Terres de l’Ebre will experience an exceptional astronomical event: a total solar eclipse, the first visible from Catalonia in more than 121 years. For a few moments, the Moon will completely cover the Sun and daylight will turn into night, offering a unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The Terres de l’Ebre area will play a leading role, as it lies within the path of totality of the eclipse. Towns such as Roquetes, home to the Ebre Observatory, will enjoy the longest duration of the phenomenon in Catalonia, with up to 1 minute and 32 seconds of total darkness. Other municipalities in the Terres de l’Ebre, including Amposta, Tortosa, l’Aldea, Camarles, Santa Bàrbara, Gandesa and Alcanar, will also become strategic locations for observation and for organising eclipse-related activities.
Beyond the astronomical phenomenon, the eclipse represents a major tourist, scientific and cultural opportunity. A significant influx of visitors is expected, with a positive impact on accommodation, catering and local commerce, as well as on the organisation of educational, family-friendly and scientific outreach activities throughout the territory.
