DeltaBirding Festival

Delta Birding Festival, comes back again to the Ebro Delta.

From the forthcoming Friday 18th to Sunday 20th September 2015, the second edition of a Birding Festival will be held in the Ebro Delta, offering a wide and attractive range of activities with conferences, courses, workshops and contests, and a big fair of products and services for the birder and any person interested in knowing and enjoying nature.

This is the only birding festival in our country that set aside money from ticket sales for conservation projects, so visitors will also help birds by visiting the Festival! In the first edition a donation of 4.000 € has been raised for a conservation project that has included ringing campaigns and water birds censuses in the Alfacada Reserve and a bird monitoring on the nearby area of “El Violí” where a piece of land formerly used as rice fields will be recovered as a natural wetland.

For three days, in the grounds of MÓN NATURA DELTA, in the Saltpans of la Tancada, people will have the opportunity to attend and participate in a lot of activities related to the observation and study of birds. Internationally renowned ornithologists will join the Festival, such as Hadoram Shirihai –renowned Israeli ornithologist working in the definitive identification Handbook of Western Palearctic Birds and running a lifetime project on Tubenoses around the world -, Dick Forsman, raptors specialist, Markus Varesvuo, most famous bird photographer, Martin Garner, always on the frontier of bird identification, Dani Lopez Velasco, a young but experienced bird guide who has been involved in many bird trips around the world, Javier de la Puente, from Seo/BirdLife staff currently involved in spectacular scientific work about Iberian migratory birds, Joan Ferrer, whose experiences at the Kerguelen islands working with albatrosses and other marine birds have been wonderful, Martí Franch, from the Catalan Institute of Ornithology that will explain the 2015 conservation project of the Festival, the New Atlas of Breeding Birds in Catalonia, a leading project in these kinds of works on bird distribution and bird population studies, and many more.

In addition to lectures, different workshops will be held about Digiscoping, trail cameras, bird care and sound recording and identification.

The Festival will start on Friday 18th September afternoon and will close on Sunday 20th afternoon and is aimed to anyone interested in birds and nature.

Some exceptional activities of the Festival will include visits to l'Alfacada lagoon -Delta's best kept treasure because it's closed to the public year round- and two boat trips, one offshore to search for seabirds, particularly Balearic and Mediterranean Shearwaters, but also Audouin's Gulls, Jaegers and other interesting species that can show up in migration and another along the Ebro river, to watch from a new angle many of the typical wetland birds of the Delta.

A contest based on one of the most important citizen science projects in our country, Ornitho.cat, will be run. The contest will give more chances to win to those who send in more bird lists to Ornitho during the whole month of September from anywhere in Catalonia, so contestants don't need to be experienced birders to win. The prize will be a high performance spotting scope, sponsored by the leading manufacturer of optical equipment SWAROVSKI OPTIK.

The commercial fair of the Festival will offer visitors the chance to browse through a lot of products and services for the birding community such optical and photography equipment, all major brands will be displaying their products, bird care (nest boxes, feeders), books, birding and nature tourism among others.

The Festival's fair will be the most important birding and nature tourism fair in our country.

The public will be able to test the optical equipment in a marquee overlooking the lagoons of the Saltpans of La Tancada, where gulls, ducks, waders, herons, egrets and flamingos thrive in good numbers. In addition, other companies will exhibit books, nest boxes, bird feeders, equipment for birders and naturalists, services of birding trips, nature photography, accommodation for naturalists, theme web sites, magazines and more.
